What happened: In a Sunday interview with radio dzBB, Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian said people who feel sleepy should stay home and watch Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial on TV rather than attend and fall asleep inside the session hall.

Zoom in: His comment followed Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante appearing to fall asleep while PhilGEPS official Rendell Sopeña testified. Presiding officer Francis Escudero even asked lawmakers nearby to nudge Abante.

Abante later admitted dozing off, saying the defense lawyers’ questions made him sleepy.

Why it matters: Gatchalian said staying awake is a basic sign of respect for the impeachment court and its proceedings.

What’s next: The impeachment trial continues as senators hear evidence and testimony related to the charges against Duterte.
