DICT Undersecretary Suspended Over ₱1.55 Billion Contract Probe

What happened: The Ombudsman placed DICT Undersecretary David Almirol Jr. under six-month preventive suspension without pay while investigating alleged conflicts of interest linked to government contracts.
The complaints trace back to a June 2025 DICT internal audit. It flagged the hiring of former Multisys personnel and contracts awarded to companies with financial ties to Multisys, a technology firm Almirol founded.
The Ombudsman said at least eight DICT contracts worth about ₱1.55 billion went to such companies between November 2023 and May 2025.
SEC records also showed Almirol still held 49.21% of Multisys shares shortly after joining DICT in August 2022.
Why it matters: The suspension is preventive, not a finding of guilt. The Ombudsman said remaining in office could affect access to documents and evidence.

Inflation Risks Keep BSP on Guard
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas may maintain a hawkish policy stance as inflation risks intensify following September’s 7.2% price increase. Nomura expects further monetary tightening may be needed to contain price pressures, with rising oil costs and weather-related risks adding uncertainty. Higher interest rates could help curb inflation but also increase borrowing costs for households and businesses.
