What happened: Filipinos transferred ₱22.1 trillion through InstaPay and PESONet from January to August 2026, up 44% from a year earlier. Transaction volume jumped 142% to 5.8 billion.

Zoom in: InstaPay handled nearly ₱11.1 trillion across 5.7 billion transactions. PESONet processed about ₱11 trillion across 87.1 million transfers.

Why it matters: Digital transfers are growing rapidly as more Filipinos use e-payments. The growth also comes as major banks waive or reduce transfer fees following new BSP pricing rules.

What’s next: The BSP wants digital payments to make up 60% to 70% of retail payments by 2028, while continuing efforts to expand e-payment use.

Ube Boom Hits Growing Pains

Ube has moved from a Filipino staple to a global flavor, appearing in products such as Starbucks’ ube drinks and desserts. The growing international demand is creating opportunities for Philippine producers, but supply remains a challenge as farmers work to increase production and meet demand. The trend could expand markets for local ube growers.

Power Bill Relief Starts In November

The removal of the 12% VAT on allowable electricity system-loss charges is expected to appear in consumers’ November bills, the ERC said. The tax currently adds about ₱20 to ₱30 to system-loss charges, while households using around 200 kilowatt-hours monthly could save at least ₱20. The system-loss charge itself remains.

DA Backs ₱210 Hog Floor

The Department of Agriculture supports a proposed ₱210-per-kilo floor price for live hogs as farmgate prices fall to ₱120 to ₱160 in some areas. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said the ₱210 proposal came from the industry, not the DA, and cannot currently be enforced because no law gives the department authority to impose a mandatory floor.
