Marks & Spencer is leaving the Philippines after 40 years

End of a retail era
The exit
After nearly four decades in local malls, Marks & Spencer will close all its Philippine stores by May 2, 2026. Its local operator, SSI Group Inc. said the move ends a long-running partnership and reflects a strategic reset. (Read it on
Zoom out
SSI cited shifting consumer behavior and a tougher retail climate. Fast fashion and e-commerce continue to take share, while discretionary spending has softened. For the first nine months of 2025, SSI’s net income dropped nearly 50% to ₱733 million, pressured by higher costs and slower demand for mid-to-upscale brands.
What now
M&S currently operates around 13 stores nationwide. SSI said it will work closely with employees and partners to ensure an orderly transition. More details on promotions, timelines, and customer advisories are expected before the May 2026 closure.

Ube is going global. The Philippines might miss the purple gold rush

The boom
Ube is no longer just halaya and kakanin. The global ube market was valued at $455.3M in 2024 and is projected to reach $943.6M by 2035, growing 6.9% annually. It is now in ice cream, lattes, cookies, yogurt, and “superfood” snacks. Asia-Pacific holds about 75% of the market, but growth is accelerating abroad.
The gap
In 2025, the Philippines earned about $3.06M or roughly ₱174M from ube exports. That is a tiny slice of a market heading toward $1B. Most exports are raw roots or basic processed forms, while branding and retail margins happen overseas.
The risk
Foreign brands market ube as a trendy purple flavor, rarely highlighting its Filipino roots. Without scaling production, processing, and origin branding, the Philippines risks becoming a supplier, not the owner, of its own story.
