Filipina Nurse Accused In ₱52B US Fraud Case

Big picture: A Filipina nurse practitioner, Marizel Yukee, is facing federal charges in Houston over an alleged $906M, or about ₱52B, healthcare fraud scheme involving Medicare and TRICARE. Prosecutors say Yukee operated wound-care clinics in Texas, Nevada, California, and Hawaii, and allegedly billed the US government for medically unnecessary allograft treatments.

By the numbers: Reports citing the indictment say the alleged scheme resulted in about $297M in payments. Prosecutors also allege illegal kickbacks, falsified patient records, and assets linked to luxury vehicles, jewelry, a Hawaii home, and a resort project in the Philippines.

Why it matters: The case is serious, but still unproven. Yukee is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
