The big picture: Asia’s AI-driven electronics boom is lifting exports, but much of the benefit is staying with companies rather than reaching households.

Why it matters: In the Philippines, manufacturing output grew only 0.5% in the first quarter, while consumer spending growth slowed to 3%. Recent wage gains were driven largely by one-off minimum wage increases, not stronger productivity or widespread hiring.

The catch: AI-related factories are capital-intensive, meaning companies can expand production without adding many workers. Filipino households are also rebuilding savings after spending heavily during the post-pandemic recovery.

Bottom line: Oxford Economics says wages and consumption need a broader manufacturing recovery. Public investment and remittances may help, but high inflation will keep spending subdued in the near term.

The Philippine peso weakened to a record-low ₱61.75 per US dollar as renewed Middle East tensions and a stronger greenback boosted demand for safe-haven assets. The decline highlights mounting pressure on the local currency, raising concerns over higher import costs, inflation, and broader economic challenges if global geopolitical risks persist.

The Philippines recorded Southeast Asia’s highest residential electricity rate in June at ₱12.43 per kWh, edging past Singapore as supply shortages and power plant outages pushed costs higher. Industry groups are urging reforms to reduce electricity prices, while rising fuel costs threaten to add further pressure on consumers and businesses. 

Upper-Middle Income, Bigger Challenge

The Philippines’ new upper-middle-income status must translate into better jobs, higher productivity, and lower poverty, Economy Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said. He urged stronger innovation, research commercialization, and closer collaboration between government, universities, and businesses to create high-quality employment and ensure economic growth benefits more Filipinos.
