TOP STORY
Provincial Bus Fare Increase Takes Effect as Oil Prices Climb

Big picture: The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved a provisional fare hike for provincial buses effective March 14 as fuel prices continue to climb. Air-conditioned, deluxe, and super deluxe buses will add ₱0.35 per kilometer, while luxury buses will increase by ₱0.45 per km. Ordinary provincial buses will raise the base fare by ₱1 and ₱0.30 for every succeeding kilometer.
Why fares are rising: Transport officials say the adjustment is meant to help operators cope with higher fuel costs while limiting the burden on commuters. Global oil prices have surged in recent weeks, with jet fuel prices climbing sharply due to supply disruptions in the Middle East, putting pressure on transport costs across land and air travel.
What’s next: Jeepney groups are pushing for a ₱2 fare hike, with the LTFRB expected to decide soon. Meanwhile, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is studying a possible reduction in airport passenger service charges at regional airports to help cushion travelers from expected airfare increases ahead of the Holy Week travel surge.
