What happened: Stratbase Institute condemned a Sept. 3 Global Times opinion piece questioning Philippine sovereignty over Batanes. It follows a June symposium in Guangzhou where Chinese scholars linked the islands to Taiwan and, by extension, China.

Why it matters: Batanes sits beside the Bashi Channel, a strategic passage between Taiwan and the northern Philippines. Philippine and US forces have also increased military activity around the area.

The bigger picture: One regional analysis says this resembles a familiar Chinese playbook: introduce a claim through academics, amplify it through media, then test foreign reactions before any official position emerges.

For now: Manila has previously rejected similar claims, saying Philippine sovereignty over Batanes is “settled and not up for debate.”
