Meet NEO: The $20,000 Robot That Does Your Chores

Zoom Out
Humanoid robots just moved from sci-fi to pre-order. Palo Alto–based robotics firm 1X has launched NEO, a consumer-ready robot designed to clean your house, fold your laundry, and even chat with you. The company calls it the “most capable humanoid on Earth.” Preorders are open now for $20,000 or a $499 monthly plan, with deliveries starting in 2026.
How It Works
NEO uses a built-in large language model (LLM) that allows it to understand speech, remember context, and respond naturally.
It can fold clothes, organize rooms, fetch groceries, and even suggest recipes by recognizing ingredients.
Built with tendon-driven actuators and Nvidia technology, it runs quietly, lifts up to 154 pounds, and weighs just 66.
Users can train NEO through the app or with remote experts who guide it through new chores.
Why It Matters
For years, humanoid robots lived in research labs. NEO changes that. By bringing advanced AI and safe, human-like motion into homes, 1X may have just created the first truly personal robot assistant—one that learns, adapts, and could redefine what “help at home” really means.

Mid-Income Condos Fuel Metro Manila Property Comeback

Metro Manila’s condo market is bouncing back, thanks to strong demand for mid-income units priced between ₱2.5 million and ₱12 million, according to Colliers Philippines. Condo take-up jumped 108% in Q3, while cancellations dropped 26%. Vacancy rates are expected to fall to 24.9% by 2027 as developers slow new projects and focus on what buyers actually want. Discounts, rent-to-own offers, and ready-for-occupancy deals are helping revive the city’s once-stalled property sector.
No Data Breach Found in GCash Systems, Says NPC
The National Privacy Commission (NPC) confirmed there was no data breach in GCash after investigating claims of leaked user data on the dark web. A forensic review found the alleged dataset didn’t match GCash’s records, and no signs of unauthorized access were detected. The NPC said all system activity came from verified internal sources. Both the NPC and CICC concluded that GCash’s systems remain secure and that the leaked data was likely recycled information.
SEC Adopts Blockchain for Secure Digital Document Signing
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is launching VERITAS, a blockchain-based system that will allow corporations to securely sign and verify digital documents. Using public-key cryptography and decentralized ledgers, the platform ensures records are tamper-proof and time-stamped. Once finalized, VERITAS will integrate into the SEC’s eSECURE and eSAP systems, replacing one-time passwords with cryptographic signatures. SEC Chair Francis Lim said the move strengthens transparency, cuts paperwork, and brings government processes closer to full digital transformation.
Equinix Brings $200-M Boost to PH Digital Infrastructure
Global data center giant Equinix has officially launched its Philippine operations, committing $200 million to strengthen the country’s digital backbone. The company unveiled new facilities in Carmona, Cavite, alongside its existing MN1, MN2, and MN3 data centers, offering over 1,000 cabinets of capacity for low-latency, high-performance connectivity. Through its Equinix Fabric, businesses can now link to over 10,000 global partners from cloud to AI providers enabling faster digital transformation. Nomura Cuts PH Growth Forecast as Corruption Scandal Hits Spending
Nomura slashed its Philippine GDP forecast to 4.7% for 2025 from 5.3%, citing weaker government spending amid a corruption probe into flood control projects. The scandal has slowed infrastructure disbursements, with expenditures dropping 7.5% in September, the sharpest since 2020. Nomura expects growth to dip to 4% in the second half, far below the government’s 5.5–6.5% target. The BSP may respond with more rate cuts to cushion the slowdown as fiscal uncertainty deepens.

The Psychology of Promotions: Likability vs. Competence

The truth about getting ahead at work
You know that brilliant colleague who keeps getting passed over for promotions? There's science behind it. Research shows workplace attraction is higher toward a likable work partner than a competent one. In a study of 51,836 leaders, only 27 were rated at the bottom for likability but still ranked top for leadership effectiveness. Being good at your job matters, but being someone people want to work with matters more.
Why Filipinos value likability even more
The Philippines has a power distance index of 94, making us one of the most hierarchical societies . Research shows that people in high power distance cultures demonstrate stronger preference for likable managers because we emphasize social relationships over pure competence. We value pakikisama. We'd rather work for someone warm and approachable than a genius who treats people poorly.
What actually gets you promoted
Warmth is the conduit of influence. It facilitates trust and helps communicate ideas effectively. Trust completely mediates the link between likability and career advancement. People promote you because being likable builds trust, making them confident in giving you bigger roles. Competence alone doesn't create that bridge. Master your craft absolutely, but in Filipino workplaces, being both skilled and a good teammate isn't optional. It's your strategic advantage.

Trump and Xi Strike a Trade Truce But No Formal Deal Yet

Big Picture
The U.S. and China are easing tensions after a high-stakes meeting in South Korea between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, their first in six years. The two leaders agreed to a temporary trade truce, halting new tariffs and restarting cooperation on issues like fentanyl, rare earths, and soybean trade. Trump called the talks “amazing,” while Xi described them as “a good start.”
Context Check
Here’s what’s on the table:
China will buy 12 million tons of soybeans this season and 25 million tons yearly for three years.
The U.S. will cut tariffs tied to fentanyl production to 10% and suspend its new “50% rule” that blacklists Chinese firms.
China will ease rare-earth export limits for one year — a key win for U.S. tech and defense industries that rely on these materials.
Why It Matters
This truce could stabilize two economies that together shape global trade and technology. It also clears a path for Nvidia, whose AI chips are central to U.S.-China tensions. Trump said Beijing may soon meet with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, signaling that tech access could be the next bargaining chip in this fragile new phase of U.S.-China relations.
Japan and the U.S. Enter a “Golden Age” — With Abe’s Shadow Still Looming
Newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Donald Trump surprised many with a warm first summit in Tokyo, signing deals on U.S. investments and critical mineral supply chains. The meeting, dubbed the start of a “Golden Age” in Japan-U.S. ties, showed Takaichi’s careful diplomacy—balancing strength with charm. Drawing inspiration from her late mentor Shinzo Abe, she echoed his vision of a “free and open Indo-Pacific,” proving she can honor Abe’s legacy while stepping into her own leadership.
Chinese E-Commerce Giants Take Over Southeast Asia

In Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, Chinese sellers are expanding fast despite tariffs and slowing growth at home. Companies are exporting their winning playbooklivestreaming, rapid product drops, and low prices—to new markets. Even Singles Day, China’s biggest shopping festival, is going global, with promotions now reaching 20 regions, signaling a new phase of Chinese retail dominance abroad.

Scientists Find a Way to Kill Cancer With Light
A new study from the United States found that near-infrared LED light combined with tiny tin oxide nanoflakes can kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones. The light heats the nanoflakes, destroying up to 92 percent of skin cancer cells in lab tests while leaving normal cells untouched. Unlike lasers or chemotherapy, this light-based therapy is affordable, gentle, and portable. If future trials succeed, LED cancer patches could one day replace harsh hospital treatments.
Can Gut Bacteria Fix Your Mood?
A new meta-analysis says fecal microbiota transplants (yep, poop transplants) might ease depression, especially for people with irritable bowel syndrome. Researchers found that restoring healthy gut bacteria helped reduce depressive symptoms, with stronger results when delivered by colonoscopy or enema instead of pills. The gut-brain link is gaining traction: your microbes may influence mood more than we thought. Scientists say longer studies are needed, but early data looks promising for the gut as a new mental health target.
AI Turns Murky Waters Crystal Clear
Researchers from MIT and Woods Hole created SeaSplat, an AI system that makes underwater scenes look sharp and realistic in real time. The tech combines 3D Gaussian Splatting with physics-based models of how light moves through water. The result: clearer, color-corrected ocean images that remove haze and distortion. SeaSplat could help robots map coral reefs and explore deep seas more safely and cheaply than before.
Microsoft Blames “Config Error” for Massive Cloud Outage
Microsoft is recovering after a global Azure outage that briefly took down Microsoft 365, Xbox, Starbucks, Capital One, and Alaska Airlines. The company traced the disruption to an “inadvertent configuration change” that broke Azure’s DNS system. At its worst, the outage caused login errors, app crashes, and slow-loading websites worldwide. Microsoft says most systems are now back online with 98% availability, though some customers are still seeing delays as full recovery continues.
Nvidia Becomes World’s First $5 Trillion Company
Nvidia just hit a $5 trillion market value, making it the most valuable company ever. The chipmaker’s stock rose 3% as demand for its AI chips soared, powering systems for OpenAI, Oracle, and other tech giants. Nvidia’s value now tops Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm combined. Investors call CEO Jensen Huang the “godfather of AI.” The milestone highlights how central Nvidia has become to the AI boom — and the growing fears of an AI bubble.
