The Architect of the Ecosystem: Andrew Tan’s Rise

The Architect of the Ecosystem: Andrew Tan’s Rise
Andrew Tan’s story began in a cramped Manila tenement, selling appliances to help his immigrant family survive. He later founded Megaworld and built a formula that reshaped urban living: integrated “live, work, play” townships.
The Three Sharp Moves
The BPO bet: After the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, while others pulled back, Tan pushed forward. He positioned Eastwood City as one of the country’s first PEZA certified IT parks, designing offices for the fast growing BPO sector.
Built in demand: Once global firms moved in, condos, malls, and restaurants had steady foot traffic. Night shift workers needed homes, food, and services nearby.
Selling the dream: He targeted young professionals, offering an attainable city lifestyle tied to tech careers.
Scaling the empire
Tan expanded beyond property through Alliance Global, with interests spanning Emperador and the master franchise of McDonald’s Philippines.
