Foreign Investors Are Pulling Billions Out of Asia

What happened: Foreign investors withdrew $315 million from Philippine stocks and government securities in August, ending three months of inflows. Total net outflows reached $4.3 billion from January to August.
Zoom out: The wider Asian market also faced heavy selling in September. Foreign investors withdrew $23.49 billion from regional stocks, with South Korea accounting for over 70% of withdrawals.
Why it matters: Higher US bond yields and a stronger dollar have made American investments more attractive. Meanwhile, Philippine stocks faced domestic economic pressures.
The big picture: Both reports point to growing caution among foreign investors. When overseas money leaves, stock markets can face additional pressure. However, the two reports cover different periods and do not establish the same causes.

Meralco Distribution Charges Set to Rise

The Energy Regulatory Commission approved Meralco’s average distribution rate at ₱1.48 per kilowatt-hour for 2027, above the existing ₱1.35 rate. The approval followed a 36% cut to Meralco’s four-year revenue request, reducing it from ₱532 billion to ₱342 billion. Customers may still face higher distribution charges despite the regulator’s reduction.
Filipino Workers Fear Mental Health Disclosure
A TELUS Health index found that 77% of Filipino workers worry their career options could suffer if their employers learned about a mental health issue. The findings highlight workplace stigma that may discourage employees from seeking help. Employers face pressure to build safer environments where workers can discuss mental health without fearing career consequences.
NFA Targets 500,000 MT of Palay Purchases
The National Food Authority plans to procure up to 500,000 metric tons of palay during the ongoing harvest season to support Filipino rice farmers and strengthen government buffer stocks. The purchases would provide farmers with another market for their harvest while helping replenish rice reserves for emergencies and government food-security programs.
